Amsterdam, 29 October, 2025 – Tap Electric, the charger and energy management platform , today announced the successful launch of Belgium’s first Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Ready Charging Plaza in Bonheiden. Located at the Gemeenschapscentrum ‘t Blikveld, the plaza showcases a collaborative, solar-powered ecosystem where parked electric vehicles (EVs) can actively support the local energy grid and community.
Nico Spoelstra, CEO and Co-Founder of Tap Electric, emphasized the significance of this project. “We believe V2G is key to solving grid congestion in cities and lowering the cost of charging, and this first Charging Plaza is just the start. The key is accessibility and affordability. That’s why our software uses open protocols like OCPP to eliminate vendor lock-in, ensuring this V2G infrastructure can easily connect and evolve with owners’ charging needs. Importantly, our algorithms prioritise the driver while building a resilient grid that works better for everyone.”.

Bidirectional charging: turning EVs into community assets
Tap Electric manages this complex energy flow using its OCPP-based software. This software enables the two-way energy transfer between the chargers, vehicles, and the grid, optimising each session—whether charging or discharging—for three key priorities: driver convenience, energy cost optimisation and local grid balance. All the intelligence happens seamlessly in the background once drivers plug in, and makes sure drivers get power when they need it.
Driver and community first
This integrated approach provides immediate benefits to both drivers and the Bonheiden community:
- Lower charging costs: Drivers benefit from reduced charging costs and more sustainable energy use without changing their driving or charging habits.
- Grid support: When cars discharge energy, they can support the local grid during periods of congestion or provide backup power for community events, turning parked EVs into valuable, flexible grid assets.
A collaborative ecosystem for scalable V2G
The successful implementation of Belgium’s first V2G ready plaza is the result of a powerful partnership dedicated to future-proof mobility:
- Gemeente Bonheiden & Gemeenschapscentrum ‘t Blikveld: The host site and local authority, leading by example in environmental sustainability.
- Klimaan: The shared mobility operator providing affordable EVs to the community.
- watt’s next: The EV infrastructure experts responsible for building the future-proof charging systems.
- Tap Electric: The energy and charging management platform ensuring smart, interoperable, and driver-first reliability.
This ambitious project is founded on a shared vision among all partners to transition from simple charging to intelligent, grid-integrated energy management. This shared goal is what drives Tim Briers, Owner of Watt’s Next, who is investing heavily in V2G technology, “For the past five years, Watt’s next has made bidirectional charging technology a key priority. I firmly believe that Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) will become a crucial link in the energy transition and will help society prevent grid congestion. The potential of battery storage in vehicles is significant, and we need to learn how to harness it intelligently. The team at Tap Electric understands this as well and is eager to contribute to this pioneering work. Together with them and the municipality of Bonheiden, we share a vision that serves as a kind of blueprint — a demonstration of what’s possible. With this initiative, we hope to inspire other municipalities and companies to start building the future today.”
Spoelstra is excited about this critical point in the industry’s evolution from simple charging to intelligent, grid-integrated energy management. “At Tap Electric, we believe the future of EV charging is open, smart, and centred around the driver. We look forward to seeing Bonheiden’s success with more V2G projects across Europe.”.
