The ChargePlace Scotland programme ends soon
Tap Electric can help you seamlessly migrate your EV chargers.
Why do I need to migrate my chargers from ChargePlace Scotland?
Changes to the ChargePlace Scotland program
The Scottish Government’s pioneering ChargePlace Scotland (CPS) network is undergoing a significant transition. With the phased closure of the network beginning in 2025 and its operations ending in 2027, the responsibility for managing public EV charging infrastructure is shifting to the private sector. This move, detailed in the Scottish Government’s Vision for Scotland’s Public EV Charging Network and Energy Saving Trust‘s guidance, aims to accelerate the delivery of up to 24,000 additional public charge points by 2030.
This is a critical moment for every charger owner currently on the CPS network. Without migrating your chargers, they could become standalone units, losing their payment functionality, back-office support, and visibility to drivers.
How does the migration work?
Transitioning your chargers from the CPS network to Tap Electric is a straightforward process designed for a hassle-free experience.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the ChargePlace Scotland network transitioning?
The Scottish Government is shifting from public funding to a private sector-led model to meet its ambitious EV charging infrastructure targets for 2030. The CPS network contracts will expire, requiring all charge points to be migrated to new operators.
What happens if I don't migrate my chargers?
Your charge points will lose back-office support, payment functionality, and real-time monitoring. They may default to a “free vend” mode, or become completely inoperable, leading to a loss of revenue and potential penalties for non-compliance with UK public charge point regulations.
Can I keep my existing hardware?
Yes, in most cases. The ability to keep your existing hardware hinges on two key factors: your charger’s compliance with OCPP 1.6 and its adherence to the latest UK public charge point regulations.
What is OCPP?
OCPP, or Open Charge Point Protocol, is the industry-standard “language” that allows electric vehicle chargers and charging networks to communicate with each other. A charger that is OCPP-compliant is like a smartphone that can connect to any mobile network—it isn’t locked to a single provider. This gives you ultimate flexibility.
Why does OCPP benefit you?
OCPP compliance means you’re not tied to a single software provider. You can easily switch your chargers to Tap’s free charger management platform, or any other OCPP-compliant software, without needing to replace your hardware. It future-proofs your investment by giving you the freedom to choose the best software and services as your needs evolve.
During our free site assessment, a certified installer will check for both OCPP 1.6 compliance and whether your chargers meet the latest UK regulations. The installer will only recommend hardware upgrades if your current units are not compatible or do not meet these crucial standards.
How can EV charger management software help you manage public charging demand?
With Tap’s free charger management platform you can:
- Onboard and manage new and existing charger locations for free
- Set and change access and tariffs across any location, any time
- Troubleshoot chargers remotely with real-time charger logs, status updates and online reboots
- Get the most out of their chargers with energy with static and dynamic load balancing energy management
If it's free to use Tap to manage my chargers, how does Tap make money?
Tap adds a service fee to the driver, and never charges any fees to the owner. This service fee starts at 10% for pay-as-you-go drivers, and can be reduced to as low as 0% depending on which subscription they choose. So, you get paid the full tariff that you set, and drivers pay the rate we show them in the app before the session starts. It’s clear for everyone and we don’t add any unnecessary costs in the chain – fair is fair!
